The Most Important Skill You're Not Mastering

(But should be, irrespective of your profession)

Presented by

Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.

- Plato

The year has just started, and you might have started receiving mails and getting youtube recommendations of “Top skills of 2024“, pitching you skills like coding, marketing and investing and what not…

However, if there is one skill which I feel is the true differentiator between ordinary and extraordinary, a skill which is beyond any profession or job level, the one which differentiates leaders from the crowd, then it is the ability to express oneself clearly and persuasively.

Articulation, the art of using language effectively to convey your thoughts and ideas.

Failing to be articulate in your speech, is like loosing to someone who said the same joke you said, but louder.

Imagine a team meeting where everyone throws in their two cents. The one who can articulate their thoughts effectively becomes the North Star. It's not about talking the most but saying the right things at the right time.

So, how can you become more articulate? Here are a few pointers:

  • Expand your vocabulary: Read widely, engage in stimulating conversations, and actively seek out new words to add to your repertoire.

  • Practice active listening: Pay close attention to what others are saying, ask clarifying questions, and avoid interrupting.

  • Organize your thoughts: Before speaking or writing, take the time to structure your ideas in a clear and logical manner.

  • Vary your sentence structure: Avoid monotony by using a mix of short and long sentences, and incorporating different grammatical structures.

  • Use vivid language: Paint a picture with your words by using descriptive language, metaphors, and similes.

  • Be confident: Speak clearly and enunciate your words. Project your voice and make eye contact with your audience.

  • Seek feedback: Ask trusted friends, colleagues, or mentors for constructive criticism on your communication skills.
