Why We Ditch Projects Right Before the Finish Line

The Last Mile Fizzle

If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start.

- Charles Bukowski

Ever noticed how starting a project is like a party, the middle is a blast, but when it's almost done, it's like the excitement vanishes into thin air? The end of your passionate project becomes long and boring.

You're not alone! This happens to the best of us, and its super common pitfall is called the Last Mile Fizzle.

So why does this happen? Well, sometimes the initial excitement wears off, revealing the not-so-fun parts (like writing reports or documentation). Other times, fear creeps in, whispering things like, "What if it's terrible?". It feels like someone let the air out of your balloon when the finish line is just around the corner.

The result? Unfinished projects pile up, deadlines get missed, the quality of our work drops, and we end up feeling kinda meh about the whole thing, like we can't even stick with something cool that we really wanted to do. It's not about not being able to do it – it's more about our brains playing tricks on us when the project is about to wrap up.

But fear not, fellow almost-finishers! We can beat this! Here are some secret weapons:

  • Harsh Truth: Firstly understand that this is what you do when a project is about to end. You jump to newer, more interesting stuff in your kitty and forget about the one which you spent so much of your energy on. But once you understand that, done is better than perfect! Things get a bit easier.

  • Understand the Impact of this last mile: Take a moment to think about how crossing that last mile will affect your entire project. Imagine the satisfaction of delivering something you're truly proud of. Consider the positive impression it will leave on others. I kid you not, my last big promotion was just because I completed some reports and documentation and sent it across the leadership team.πŸ˜›
