Don't Major in Minor Things ❌ ❌ ❌

The man who does more than he is paid for will soon be paid for more than he does.

- Napoleon Hill

Feeling like a hamster on a wheel? A motivational speaker once said, "Don't major in minor things." This powerful quote, by entrepreneur Jim Rohn, offers a simple yet effective solution to feeling overwhelmed and unproductive.

To explain this, Rohn uses the example of sales. Prospecting for clients, scheduling meetings, and keeping records are all necessary tasks. However, according to Rohn, these pale in comparison to the real game-changer: spending quality time with potential customers. He argues that many salespeople get bogged down in the minor details, leaving little room for the high-impact activity of building relationships and closing deals.

We all fall victim to the busy trap – endlessly checking emails, organizing files, attending pointless meetings – while neglecting the core activities that drive progress. The key, as Rohn emphasizes, is to differentiate between movement and achievement. Being constantly busy doesn't guarantee results. Instead, focus on the high-value actions that will truly move the needle forward.

So how do we escape the busy trap and avoid majoring in minor things?

  • Don't Mistake Movement for Achievement: Merely staying busy does not equate to progress. It's easy to fall into the trap of perpetual motion, exhausting ourselves without making meaningful strides towards our goals. Instead, we must pause and ask ourselves: Are we truly moving forward, or are we merely spinning our wheels?

  • Identify the Majors and Minors: Imagine a grid with effort on the horizontal axis and impact on the vertical axis. Tasks requiring high effort but low impact (like excessive record-keeping) fall into the "majoring in minors" trap. Focus on high-impact activities that may require less effort, like brainstorming creative solutions.

  • Beware the Time Stealers: The phone, email, and other communication systems can be major time stealers. Designate specific times for checking them, and protect sacred times from intrusion.

  • Embrace the Power of "No": We often overload ourselves with commitments that distract from our priorities. Learn to politely decline requests that don't align with your goals.

  • Harness the Written Word: Consider keeping a journal to capture ideas, solve problems on paper, and track progress towards goals.

Let me close today’s edition, with another of my favourite quote by Jim Rohn.

Let others lead small lives, but not you. Let others argue over small things, but not you. Let others cry over small hurts, but not you. Let others leave their future in someone else’s hands, but not you.

- Jim Rohn
