The truth in combat is different for each individual.

Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee is widely regarded as one of the greatest martial artists ever. Today, I want to share a tool he utilized to achieve such mastery. Bruce Lee's martial art, Jeet Kune Do, was exclusive, limited to twelve people at a time. While you can read numerous articles about Jeet Kune Do (JKD), nothing can probably prepare you for the reality of training in it. For example, the exercise experiences included skipping rope and shadow boxing, followed by practicing kicks and punches on training equipment such as focus gloves, kicking shields, and heavy bags. Though these tools are common in martial arts schools today but were not as prevalent back then. The sessions also included full-contact sparring, with participants wearing boxing gloves, shin guards, groin protectors, mouthpieces, and tennis shoes.

Why is this important?

Before JKD, training consisted of learning intricate martial art forms and self-defense techniques that were purportedly foolproof against any attacker. However, before JKD, most people learned art forms but had not tested these techniques in real sparring situations. With JKD, participants did. One quickly discovered that much of what they had learned did not hold up under pressure, resulting in new sparring participants getting hit frequently in the beginning. You can imagine that this was a challenging, painful, and great learning experience.

Learning through experience and problem solving in real time is more beneficial to your learning than rote learning!

The most significant obstacle was the approach to learning. Consider how we are learn in school and how that was based primarily on rote memorization. This method worked well in other martial arts where techniques were presented in clear, structured sequences. However, JKD emphasized problem-solving, self-discovery, and figuring things out independently, rather than relying solely on the instructor for answers.

JKD has core credos. One important one is that "The truth in combat is different for each individual." This credo was followed by four principles Bruce Lee developed and used in his study and practice of martial arts.

  • Research your own experience

  • Absorb what is useful

  • Reject what is useless

  • Add what is specifically your own

The first principle, "Research your own experience," encourages individuals to reflect on each training session. This translates to all aspects of our lives. One starts asking: What did this experience mean to me? How did it make me feel? What purpose or value did it hold?

One starts to understand the importance of being open and honest with one’s self, letting the experience speak to you, and listening carefully. It was crucial to take stock of the entire experience, not just the positive aspects or the parts you enjoyed. Every experience is valuable and provides an opportunity for self-discovery and increased self-knowledge.

The second principle, "Absorb what is useful," made it clear that trying to imitate Bruce Lee or anyone else was not the right approach. This principle applied to both physical techniques, such as developing remarkable sense of timing during sparring, and mental attributes. The guiding maxim is that if you understood something and could use it, it belonged to you. When considering incorporating something, 1) analyze it, 2) experiment with it, and 3) refine it to make it beneficial.

The third principle, "Reject what is useless," involves letting go of things that were not useful or adversely affecting you. This included physical techniques or mental attitudes. This principle makes you realize that you might need to change your attitude, a process that requires time and effort. However, once you manage to let go of your restrictive mindset, you can experience a newfound freedom.

The final principle, "Add what is specifically your own," required deeper introspection. Add your own attitude, attributes, and preferences into your daily life, making your life uniquely yours.

These four principles fundamentally changed my mindset and helped me develop a new approach to learning and living. They are invaluable tools for enhancing personal development, allowing one to explore oneself, determine what works and what doesn't, and discover what makes one unique. These principles can be applied to any life situation, challenge, or problem. By using them, one can enrich their life, explore their capabilities, try new things, and, as Bruce Lee said, "honestly express yourself." When faced with obstacles, adversities, or barriers, these principles can help turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones. The four principles—Research your own experience, Absorb what is useful, Reject what is useless, and Add what is specifically your own—offer a dynamic prescription for personal growth.

I have used these principles in my professional career! If you have a small business, here is one way start using Bruce Lee’s credo with ClickFunnels:
